Shop Bleecker Street on November 18th | Aiming to Halt the Proliferation of Vacant Storefronts on St

Renowned Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village has been particularly impacted by the closing of “mom-and-pop” shops witnessed throughout New York City, hard to miss by its proliferation of vacant storefronts. Fresh on the heels of the Vanishing New York Small Businesses Town Hall last week, arranged by New York State Senator Brad Hoylman, comes #ShopBleecker Day Saturday, November 18th. Shop Bleecker Day is being organized by the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and will be marked by special deals with local stores offering discounts and events. More information below:

On Saturday, November 18th, over 80 businesses on Bleecker Street will be offering exclusive deals, discounts, free classes for kids, free workout classes, makeovers and samples as a way to generate foot traffic and thank the community for its support.

I’m sure you have seen an abundance of “For Lease” signs throughout the city. The Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce has taken notice and created a coalition of businesses on and along the historic thoroughfare as a way to reinvigorate the community for the month of November and beyond. Additionally they are trying to connect landlords in the area to businesses looking for a presence in the neighborhood.

#ShopBleecker day kicks off at 12:00 p.m. at Father Demo Square at 220 Bleecker Street (at 6th Avenue and Carmine Street), with a greeting from Maria Diaz, the executive director of the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, followed by remarks from State Senator Brad Hoylman (author of “Bleaker on Bleecker”), Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer & Assembly member Deborah Glick, and a picnic brunch with refreshments provided by David’s Tea and Bantam Bagels.

Discounts available at participating stores, from 10-40% off:

Of course, it must be noted that even what-would-be-considered-successful businesses are having a hard time when landlords dramatically increase the rent, often doubling and tripling it, and there are no protections for small businesses in place. But we still want to support the businesses that are here to give them a chance to survive.
